ABHI Apps & Wearables Strategy

Topic : Digital Health, News and Press Type : Report

Evidence-based apps and wearables have enormous potential to transform how healthcare is delivered, supporting earlier intervention, helping people manage their health and enabling more care to take place outside traditional clinical settings.

Yet despite the UK's strengths in digital health innovation, too many proven technologies struggle to move beyond pilot programmes into routine NHS use. Fragmented evaluation processes, unclear commissioning responsibilities and a lack of sustainable funding continue to limit adoption.

ABHI's new Apps and Wearables Strategy sets out a practical roadmap to address these challenges, with four key recommendations focused on creating clearer routes to adoption, establishing sustainable reimbursement models, aligning regulatory and evidence requirements, and strengthening NHS implementation capabilities.

Developed with input from industry and wider healthcare stakeholders, the strategy supports the ambitions of the NHS 10-Year Health Plan, with a focus on ensuring effective technologies reach patients faster, NHS organisations can adopt innovation with confidence, and companies have a clearer route to scale.
