A Collective Call to Improve Wound Care Across Europe
Topic : News and Press Type : Report
Chronic wounds, which affect up to 2% of the population and account for as much as 4% of healthcare expenditure, are not currently treated as a strategic priority by many health systems. This is leading to delayed intervention, avoidable complications, and significant variation in care, ultimately driving poorer patient outcomes and placing additional strain on already stretched services.
Working with industry colleagues and partners across Europe, including MedTech Europe, we are pleased to support the publication of Shaping the Future of Wound Care in Europe.
Endorsed by 15 other national associations, the report sets out a strong and unified perspective on both the scale of the challenge and the opportunity ahead. It highlights that the key issue is not a lack of available solutions, but inconsistent implementation across health systems. Earlier intervention, better coordinated care, and funding models aligned to outcomes are all achievable, but not yet widely embedded.
The findings reinforce several priorities for ABHI members, including the need to advance value-based procurement, support workforce development, and ensure that HealthTech is recognised as a critical enabler of improved patient outcomes and system efficiency.
We will continue to work closely with MedTech Europe and UK stakeholders to ensure these insights inform ongoing policy discussions, particularly those linked to NHS reform, productivity, and prevention. Members are encouraged to share and amplify the report across their networks to help strengthen the collective voice for change in wound care.
