Shaping the future of cardiovascular health

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality globally, responsible for an estimated 17.9m deaths each year. It also contributes to disability, early retirement and absence from work, putting considerable economic pressure on health systems and wiping trillions of dollars off potential global GDP. The rise of non-communicable diseases - especially obesity and diabetes - is intensifying cardiometabolic risk, and therefore exacerbating the strain on health systems and national economies.

In December 2025 Europe launched its Safe Hearts Programme, the first EU-wide initiative to address CVD. At the same time innovations in cardiometabolic drugs, advanced diagnostics, wearable devices, and AI-enabled risk prediction and monitoring are creating new opportunities for prevention and treatment. These will not do the job on their own; they will need to sit alongside public-health measures to enrich diets, reduce tobacco and alcohol use, increase physical activity and improve air quality to deliver real impact.

Against this backdrop, Economist Enterprise’s Cardiovascular Health Summit will bring together policymakers, clinicians, industry experts, medtech providers, digital-solution developers, patient groups, scientists and investors to define the policy, innovation and investment strategies needed to tackle CVD.
