Global Supply Disruption: Bone Cement Used in Joint Replacement Procedures
Topic : Type : Briefing
We are aware of a global supply disruption affecting certain bone cement products used in joint replacement procedures.
NHS Supply Chain has activated a national incident response and is coordinating actions with NHS England, Department of Health and Social Care, and clinical leadership. Relevant suppliers have already been contacted directly.
Trusts have been asked not to contact suppliers directly at this stage, as allocation and prioritisation are being managed nationally to ensure a coordinated and clinically led approach.
A live update page is available via NHS Supply Chain, alongside joint communications issued by the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), DHSC and NHS England. NHS Supply Chain has also provided guidance on the use of appropriate alternative products where clinically suitable.
NHS Supply Chain recognises that individual organisations may approach suppliers seeking preferential allocation. A formal statement will shortly be issued encouraging companies to follow national coordination arrangements and avoid local agreements that could inadvertently disrupt system-wide prioritisation.
We are in contact with the DHSC supply resilience team to understand whether any additional guidance for suppliers is required and will share further updates as they become available.
This situation is evolving rapidly, and we will continue to keep members informed.
If any members are experiencing difficulties related to this disruption, please contact us directly so that we can connect you with the DHSC supply resilience team. Enquiries@abhi.org.uk
