2G & 3G Switch-Off: Industry Update
Topic : Type : Briefing
Mobile Network Operators will switch off 2G and 3G networks by 2033, with some changes occurring sooner - EE plans to end 2G by 2029, and VMO2 will withdraw 2G roaming by October 2025. The move supports the rollout of faster, more secure 4G and 5G services. Many impacted devices use 2G for machine-to-machine (M2M) and IoT services in sectors like healthcare.
The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) is working with Ofcom and industry to ensure a smooth transition, especially for critical services and vulnerable users. Affected organisations are urged to act now.
