About Gregory

Dr. Stein is an experienced clinician and life sciences executive with diagnostics, medical device, pharmaceutical and biotech experience. He has consistently demonstrated management success in positions of increasing responsibility ranging from Assistant Medical Director of an Emergency Department to CEO of a biopharmaceutical drug development company. He is successful at technology-based business start-up and management from concept to going concern, with a proven ability to transform complex technological and scientific concepts into viable business ventures.

Dr. Stein currently serves as the President and CEO of Curtana Pharmaceuticals, which he co-founded in April, 2013. The company is focused on the development of drugs that directly target the cancer stem cells associated with glioblastoma and other brain cancers. Prior to starting Curtana, Dr. Stein was the Vice President, Operations and Medical Affairs at Sova Pharmaceuticals, a company he co-founded in March, 2010. Sova is focused on the development of novel therapeutic drugs for the treatment of inflammatory and neuropathic pain. Prior to co-founding Sova, he was the Senior Director of Product Marketing at Genoptix, which was acquired by Novartis. Genoptix is a specialized laboratory service provider focused on delivering personalized and comprehensive diagnostic services to community-based hematologists and oncologists. Prior to joining Genoptix, Dr. Stein was an entrepreneur with a focus on identifying innovative technology for commercial development in the medical therapeutic, device and diagnostic areas. He has been the founder of two other early-stage drug development companies, Opus Pharmaceuticals and Uzima Bioscience. He also has provided consultative services to pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies with a focus on business analysis, marketing and strategy formulation. In 2008 he worked extensively with two different groups looking to start a venture capital fund.

Dr. Stein is a Director at Revolutions, Inc., which operates SpinLife.com, one of the largest internet retailers of durable medical equipment. He has also been a Visiting Lecturer at The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego where he taught a fast-paced and intensive course to second-year graduate students called “Evaluating Opportunities in the Life Sciences.” Before pursuing a career in the business world, Dr. Stein practiced Emergency Medicine in a busy urban hospital on the west side of Chicago where he served as the Assistant Medical Director of the department and Associate Emergency Medical Services Director for the regional EMS system. In his capacity as Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Stein was responsible for overseeing quality assurance activities, managing the trauma service, including prehospital care, and continuing education activities, as well as handling day-to-day operational oversight and management of the physicians.

Dr. Stein is formerly board certified in Emergency Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Illinois Affiliated Hospitals in Chicago and is a graduate of the 3-year accelerated Independent Study Program at the Ohio State University School of Medicine. Dr. Stein received a B.A in Psychology from UC San Diego and an MBA from The Rady School of Management at UC San Diego.
