After much watching and waiting we now have clarity on Ministerial appointments in the new coalition Government. Most notably for SME's and Medical Technology exporters is the appointment of Vince Cable to Business Secretary who shortly after taking control of the Business Innovation and Skills Department (BIS) was one of the first to suffer budget reductions of £863m as part of George Osbornes £6.2bn spending cut announcement. William Hague has become the Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs responsible for FCO and currently UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) has still to announce its new Minister.
ABHI is working hard to engage with new Ministers to ensure that the significant contribution to the economy made by UK Medical Technology exporters is fully understood. Recent reports of growth for the UK Manufacturing Sector fueled by increased UK exports paint a positive picture. However the enormous pressure to cut spending will clearly impact across all areas of Government support for industry and what this means for our sector will take some time to crystalise.
