Issue No. 89
05.03.10

1. Editor's Comment:
Opportunities; North Africa:

Since the last issue of this e-newsletter I have participated in a trade mission to Libya. The mission, superbly organised by the Libyan British Business Council (LBBC) comprised architects, turnkey operators and healthcare consultancy & planners together with medical equipment providers, all aware of the wealth of healthcare opportunities Libya has to offer.  See Mission Directory

Pictured: Top table at an LBBC-organised seminar at the Tripoli Medical Centre.

The UK Libyan collaboration under the MOC (Memorandum of Collaboration) has gone from strength to strength with the support of the respective Health Ministers.

Firm foundations have now been laid within the healthcare landscape. Hopefully, this will provide an opportunity for the UK healthcare industry to support the developments of healthcare in Libya through its diverse range of products and services.

Stuart Smalley
Consultant Advisor, DH International

It must be noted, however, that doing business in Libya is not for the fainthearted, and companies with robust bank balances are best suited to considering the market. Business dealings in Libya require perseverance and generally a long-term view for financial returns. The importance of having face-to-face communication and a reliable in-country contact were also emphasised.  If seriously considering Libya as an export market, the value of engaging with the LBBC should not be underestimated. See 'Libya Infrastructure - Growth Expected to Return in 2010' in Section 2 below).

Mediconex 2010, Egypt:
Staying with North Africa, Suzan Labib, Advisor - Trade & Investment in Cairo, will be manning a stand at Mediconex in Cairo at the end of March, and has extended an invitation for UK healthcare companies to send company literature free-of-charge for Embassy personnel to display at the show. (See Section 7 for more information).

General:
Export Club:
Since my return, ABHI has held another sell-out Export Club, this time concentrating on the BRIC markets. ABHI's gratitude is extended to the UK-India Business Council for their hospitality in hosting this event. See: Export Club BRIC Agenda and BRIC export Club Attendees

ABHI's next Export Club will be held on Thursday, 25 March, and focus on the export markets of Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Please reserve your place

Inward Delegation from Singapore: Valsa Panicker, the lead Commercial Officer responsible for healthcare in Singapore, visited the UK this week with a delegation of Singaporean buyers/distributors. ABHI organised a day of one-to-one meetings for the delegation at the BIS Conference Centre, London on Monday.  All delegates now feature as Business Opportunities on the Business Opportunities section of our website with Valsa as the point of contact.  (See Section 5 below).

Finally, the long-awaited news on Medica: Space on the UK pavilion for Medica 2010 will be going on sale in the next 10 days, and the next issue of this e-Newsletter, to be issued on 16 March, will have a Medica-specific focus.

4. This Issue's Feature; Integrating China and the UK

Integrated Technologies Ltd (ITL) was established in the UK 35 years ago and has since built a reputation as the market leader in the design and manufacture of medical diagnostic and analytical instruments.

In the face of booming business, the company has recently opened a factory in China to supplement its UK manufacturing capability, allowing it to take on more orders, cut costs and keep ahead of the competition.

Over the past 35 years, ITL has designed and manufactured hundreds of medical diagnostic and analytical instruments. The company’s core business is contract design and manufacturing. A client brings a concept that it wants ITL to prepare for market and ITL deals with all stages of the process. This can involve design, building a prototype, obtaining any necessary regulatory approvals, and finally manufacturing the actual product, or any part of that process. More

DH International has contributed its Quarterly Newsletter to ABHI, which includes the department 's recent activities in Brazil, China, Iraq and Libya:

Brazil Written into the Memorandum of Understanding with Brazil and a topic of increasing bilateral interest since, has been improving access to Primary Care. This was a predominating theme during the Secretary of State's visit to Brazil in February 2008 and emerged as the priority subject during Dr Temporao’s inward mission to the United Kingdom in September 2009. More
China The UK/China Partners in Health Innovation programme has now completed its 2-year run and there is a clear view that this has been a resounding success. Several major companies have participated—GSK, Astra Zeneca, BUPA, HCA etc, etc. Certainly, the programme has elevated names and reputations in China. More
Iraq The Department of Health's Iraq Clinical Training and Development Programme reached a successful conclusion on 30th November 2009. Under the initiative, approximately 350 Iraqi doctors and nurses were hosted in the United Kingdom to update their clinical skills and to equip them as ‘change agents’ in the rebuilding of the Iraq health care system. More
Libya The UK/ Libyan relationship has matured well following the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation and the subsequent supplementary MoU in November 2010. This latter MoU, signed by the Secretary of State, is an ‘umbrella’ to provide a government to government link to oversee  training programmes. More
