1. Editor's Comment:
|
Last week ABHI, in conjunction with UKTI, The High Commission for Pakistan and Healthcare Dimensions, was delighted to welcome a senior delegation from Pakistan. The delegation, which included H. E. Khushnood Akhtar Lashari, Secretary, Ministry of Health, Islamabad was well received both at The High Commission (Tuesday, 22.07) and at ABHI (Wednesday, 23.07). The High Commission staged the inauguration conference of the HIP (Healthcare Initiative Pakistan), where there were many stimulating presentations Such was the impact of the presentations, that I, amongst others, now share the view that Pakistan represents an alternative to India.
The increased sector growth in India is well-documented (including an extract in this e-newsletter). However, healthcare in Pakistan should not be overlooked. If anyone would like to pursue this market, I would be happy to discuss opportunities – especially in the fields of diagnostics, surgical instruments and, by way of sign-posting, pharmaceuticals. Also see the Market Report prepared by Saima Anjarwala of the British Deputy High Commission, Karachi (section 3 below).

Libya:
Another market I focused on last week was Libya, a market in which its huge potential in healthcare (together with education, construction, oil and gas) is already earmarked by many. I attended the ‘Libya – Opportunity & Challenge III’, organised by the Middle East Association on Thursday. One of the panels was dedicated to ‘Trading with Libya’, where presenters included Hans Solerod of Smiths Medical.
Libya presently has good relationships with a number of other European countries, particularly Italy. There are opportunities for more British companies, especially those with bases in the UAE and Qatar. Please contact me to discuss. Also see Libyan Article
Directories:
Finally, following months of liaising, I can inform that the ABHI directories for Medica, Medical Fair Bangkok and Arab Health are up-to-date, in line with company requests, as of going to print with this e-newsletter.
Theresa.
PS: Please note that ABHI still has a small amount of space available for sale at both Medica and Arab Health. If interested in obtaining this space, please e-mail: exhibitions@abhi.org.uk

24 November 2009
Venue: Millennium Gloucester Hotel, London SW7
Register – https://www.abhi-events.org.uk/ukmarketconference
“Innovation for quality” should become a key principle in the operation of the NHS in England. At last, there is the realisation that the NHS is tax-funded from the economy and, therefore, should make a contribution back to the economy.
As was explored at the 2008 Conference, there are a range of influences at work in the wake of Lord Darzi’s Next Stage Review of the NHS. Many initiatives are underway - one year on - which have made a difference.
How will this affect your business? What are the opportunities? And what does 2010 hold? More
Registration and Sponsorship:
Space at the conference will be limited, with delegate rates starting at just £195. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. To enquire about either please email conferences@abhi.org.uk or call +44 (0) 20 7960 4360.

THE MEDICAL DEVICE MARKET: UNITED KINGDOM
How will the current economic downturn affect the UK's medical device market?
The UK has one of the largest medical device markets in the world, valued at US$7.8 billion in 2009. The domestic market is the third largest in Europe behind Germany and France. Per capita expenditure is not much lower in comparison to France and Germany and is equal to US$125.
There was a period of huge growth in health spending under the Labour government, which saw the NHS budget almost triple. In 2009, the NHS budget is £98.2 billion, and will rise to £102.3 billion in 2010. However, as a result of the economic downturn, NHS funding could fall by 2.5 to 3.0 per cent per annum from 2011/12, which is equivalent to a cut of between £8 to £10 billion over three years and up to £15 billion over five years. The NHS is well equipped to deal with the financial shortage, as it has seen marked improvements in recent years.
In an effort to reduce waiting lists, the government is contracting private organisations to operate and manage independent treatment centres. In addition, as part of the Patient Choice scheme, NHS patients can now choose to have a minor operation in a private hospital and over 3,500 patients a month opt to be treated in the private sector.
The growth of the UK medical device market is predominantly import-led as many domestic manufacturers are not able to rapidly adjust to changes in demand. This led to a trade deficit for the seventh year in succession in 2008.
Payment by Results represents a dramatic change in how the NHS is financed and is key to the government’s healthcare modernisation plans. The Payment by Results scheme, combined with Patient Choice, effectively means that hospitals are competing for patients, and while this offers the opportunity to drive up standards of healthcare, it also creates an unprecedented level of financial risk for Primary Care Trusts and NHS hospitals.
Published by Espicom Business Intelligence, The Medical Device Market: UK, Opportunities and Challenges, is ideal for executives wanting to understand the key drivers in the medical market and have access to a wealth of statistical data, including five-year market projections. Included with the report are 3 free quarterly updated outlook reports, enabling you to keep up to date with market developments for a year.
