1. Editor's Comment:

Government’s Office for Life Sciences initiative:

Over the last few months ABHI has worked closely with government and stakeholders on the Government’s Office for Life Sciences initiative. On Tuesday the Government published the blueprint which incorporates much of the input provided by ABHI, and moves the initiative in to its next phase. More

ABHI will be working closely with Government and stakeholders to ensure the implementation of the promising measures announced in the document. ABHI will also be running a conference on 24 November which will deal with the status of delivery and implications at that time. Conference

One of the Government departments ABHI works closely with is DH International, the international division of the Department of Health. In fact, this e-newsletter heralds the first of DH International's quarterly updates. Working in conjunction with UKTI, the FCO, the British Consultants & Construction Bureau as well as ABHI, the role of DH International is to promote the best of British healthcare worldwide. Their first update features their programme of activity from February to June 2009 See Section 7.

ABHI's Export Club Update:

ABHI's Export Club focusing on Australia and New Zealand; 9 July 2009

The latest event in ABHI's Export Club programme featured Australia and New Zealand. Expertly chaired by Peter Murray of S. Murray & Co., the event opened with a presentation by Andrew Crofts, Healthcare Markets Editor of Espicom Business Intelligence. Andrew provided a comprehensive overview of healthcare within Australia and New Zealand.

A regulatory perspective was presented by Dr Howard Dobbs of HSD Consulting, and company case studies by Brian Zealey, Export Manager of Sidhil Ltd (pictured), and Alan Sheridan, Chairman of A. Algeo Ltd. Last year A. Algeo officially launched its first Australian operation (A. Algeo PTY), and a large part of Alan's presentation focused on this. Algeo launches in Australia

7. UK Government Updates:

As referred to above, DH International's first Update features their programme of activity from February to June 2009. The programme includes inward and outward visits encompassing Libya, Brazil, Lebanon and Iraq.

DH International Quarterly Update

The Department of Health recently organised and hosted Innovation EXPO 2009, which DH International attended. This very successful and high profile event featured outstanding healthcare innovations from academia as well as the public and private sectors.

Ministers from BIS/UKTI and DH attended, and a number of important and inspirational speeches were made by ministers and leading industrialists.



Healthcare Trade Mission to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand:
10 - 18 September 2009

UK Trade and Investment is leading a healthcare mission to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand to help UK companies address the wide ranging opportunities in these markets. The mission will visit each country for two days, starting in Singapore (10-11 September), moving onto Malaysia (14-15 September) and ending in Thailand (16-18 September) to coincide with Medical Fair in Bangkok previously known as HOSPIMedica.

Each market will offer a general briefing for the companies, as well as an opportunity to present their products and services to an invited audience, followed by a networking reception. Companies will also have free time to pursue their own appointments.

New Zealand Sales Success
News from the International Division of Sidhil is the tender award for 54 Inspiration Childs Cots for the Hamilton District Hospital on the North Island in New Zealand.

The Waikato District Health Board was suitably impressed with the innovative design features of the Sidhil product, and following extensive trials decided that the Sidhil Inspiration was the product of choice.

This represents a great breakthrough for Sidhil - not only in the New Zealand market, but for its export sales generally and they look forward to continued sales successes from ‘down under'.
