11/06/2003 ABHI Appoints New Chairman

Geoff Morris was formally appointed as the Chairman of ABHI's Council at the Council's Annual General Meeting on May 22nd last. He has now taken over from Colin Morgan, who was Chairman for the last three years and who kindly agreed to continue on Executive for a further year.

Gordon Aylward, Director General at ABHI said: "Under Colin Morgan's professional guidance, ABHI have gone from strength to strength over the past three years culminating in a government sponsorship initiative which sees the medical devices industry in the UK working in partnership with government, increasing the value of our industry's products and services. All of us in ABHI's Secretariat want to mark the conclusion of his Chairmanship by congratulating him on the great success that he has had and by thanking him for the committed way in which he has worked with the ABHI".

Geoff Morris is the Regional Director for the UK and Ireland for Medtronic. He has worked in the health-care industry for the last 23 years, primarily with Medtronic Ltd for the last 19. Geoff chairs ABHI's Processes and Procurement Policy Group and has represented Medtronic on Council for three years.

Speaking on his new appointment Geoff said: "I see great potential for ABHI at this stage of its development and within the changes in the health-care environment. ABHI's PrISM Agenda and the prospect of a positive working relationship with government are a breakthrough. The Chairman's role presents me with a great privilege but also with the unique opportunity to integrating the contributions of our members to the various stage processes in the industry. I look forward to working with the ABHI Council to maintain and develop the outstanding record it has developed under the leadership of Colin Morgan".

ABHI extends a very warm welcome to Geoff Morris and looks forward to work closely with him over the next years.

The Association of British Health-Care Industries (ABHI) is the lead trade association for the medical systems industry. This sector comprises not only manufacturers of medical devices, equipment and consumables, but also service companies, distributors, professional groups (such as architects and lawyers), and other suppliers to the medical community.

The ABHI represents approx. 200 member companies with a total domestic turnover of over £3 billion representing approx. 80% of the industry output. The membership currently includes six Special Interest Sections and five sectoral trade associations, the latter in turn have a further 400 member companies.

  1. Advance and promote medical systems (devices, equipment, technologies and services) within the UK and globally.
  2. Provide a forum for policy discussion with the industry's customers, legislators, public bodies and interested groups.

Mr Geoff Morris Geoff Morris is the Regional Director for the UK and Ireland for Medtronic. He has worked in the health-care industry for the last 23 years, primarily with Medtronic Ltd for the last 19. He has also worked in the pharmaceuticals industry as well as for a distributor and has been involved significantly in the growth of Medtronic in the UK to the point that there are now 220 employees. He has a BSc Honours Science degree and his family has a strong medical background, his father having been an ENT surgeon and General Practitioner.
