2. CMEF '08

China no longer seems like a difficult
market, in a land far, far away which requires patience and deep
pockets to succeed in. CMEF is a show where one gets a sense that
China means business and is changing so fast that old attitudes
need to be thrown away and thrown away quickly!

ABHI is delighted to announce that it will, once again, take a
UK pavilion at the Spring CMEF next year. 12,243 medical

3. Market Intelligence;
China
China has the world’s largest population. In 2005, it was
officially estimated at 1,307.6 million. The province of Henan, in
south-central China, had the largest population, with 93.8 million,
equal to 7.7% of the total. Eastern China was the most populated
region of the country, inhabited by 373.7 million people in 2005.
The area includes Shanghai, China’s largest city, with a population
of 17.8 million.
Since opening its economy to the West in the late 1970s, China has
experienced rapid growth. For 2007, China’s GDP is estimated at
US$3,156 billion. While this makes China one of the world’s largest
economies, the sheer size of the population means that per capita
wealth is very low, at around US$2,390 in 2007.
Healthcare provision is extremely uneven. It is best in the
towns and cities; many rural areas have very little provision,
following the near total decay of the Communist rural healthcare
system ......

DISCOVER YOUR BUSINESS POTENTIAL IN CHINA

China is one of the fastest growing markets in the world

trading system can make it a complicated place in which to do
business.
UK Trade & Investment is inviting all Healthcare and BioPharma
companies, who are interested in finding out about the potential of
the China market, to its FREE informative
seminar.

5. Focus on Singapore
Singapore’s medical standards are among the highest in Asia, and
it is widely acknowledged as a regional centre for medical
excellence. Healthcare is offered by both the public and private
sectors, with the public sector providing 80% of tertiary care and
20% of primary care, with the private sector accounting for the
rest. ...
See: Singapore Healthcare Market Report.
An 8-member healthcare mission from Singapore will be visiting
the UK from 8 – 12 October. They are keen to identify UK products
for exclusive representation in Singapore and the region, with
several having well established links in neighbouring markets. UK
companies interested in exploring long term collaboration in this
promising market are invited to meet the mission at ABHI on Monday,
8 October.

6. Opening the Doors to India -
Opportunities and Challenges of Offshoring Medical
Devices
Currently valued at approximately US$5.6 billion (The Medical
Device Market: United Kingdom – Espicom
31 Jan 2007) the UK market for medical devices is the third largest
market in Europe. It represents a promising opportunity for
manufacturers and service providers. But with this
opportunity comes the added pressure for medical device companies
to stay ahead of the competition.
In order to gain a competitive edge, medical device companies
are faced with the challenge of developing new, innovative products
or new versions of existing products that adopt the latest methods
of treatment and conform to the highest quality standards — all at
a reduced cost.
To compete in this attractive market, many medical device companies
are prospering by partnering with offshore outsourcing companies
and collaborating on medical device development and
manufacturing

9. Industry-wide survey - All
requested to submit
Closing date: 7 September 2007
Last summer, ABHI in partnership with Ernst & Young
conducted a survey of the medical device industry entitled
"Your Industry, Your Future, Your Say" which
highlighted the significant challenges and uncertainty within
the UK medical device sector at this time. The trends in this
paper showing evidence of a weak UK market were then underlined
by two business trends papers conducted in 2006 and 2007.
This year we are repeating the exercise to discover if this is a
continuing trend, and to find out what impact recent developments
in NHS procurement policy, such as the outsourcing of NHS Logistics
to DHL/Novation, have had on the sector. This survey will provide
vital evidence that ABHI can use to reinforce its arguments to
Government on how its policies are impacting on the industry, as
well as giving an authoritative picture of the current state of the
industry.
We are keen to ensure that the widest possible participation is
represented in this study.
