1. Editor's Comment
Welcome to Issue 29, where the main focus is on Asia:
notification of an inward mission from Singapore, update on
HOSPIMedica Thailand 07, announcement of an ABHI Pavilion at the
CMEF* 08 and a piece on setting up a manufacturing base in China
(Shenzhen) to name just a few ...
Not overlooking other matters, I would particularly like to draw
attention to the ABHI/Ernst & Young
industry-wide survey, outlined below, and encourage you to take a
few minutes to respond. By doing so, you will be contributing to
the debate on issues that are directly impacting your business, and
assist us in lobbying the government to provide the best
environment for the industry.

2. Focus on Singapore
Singapore’s medical standards are among the highest in Asia, and
it is widely acknowledged as a regional centre for medical
excellence. Healthcare is offered by both the public and private
sectors, with the public sector providing 80% of tertiary care and
20% of primary care, with the private sector accounting for the
rest. ...
See: Singapore Healthcare Market Report.
An 8-member healthcare mission from Singapore will be visiting
the UK from 8 – 12 October. They are keen to identify UK products
for exclusive representation in Singapore and the region, with
several having well established links in neighbouring markets. UK
companies interested explore long term collaboration in this
promising market are invited to meet the mission at ABHI on Monday,
8 October.
| Valsa Panicker is the lead Commercial Officer
for Healthcare, Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals at UK Trade &
Investment in Singapore, a post she has held for 12 years. Valsa
will be pleased to meet interested companies to brief them on the
opportunities in Singapore, Hospimedica Asia 2008 and of the UK
Trade & Investment services available to help them expand their
exports to Singapore. |

3. CMEF '08; 18-21 April
2008

China no longer seems like a difficult
market, in a land far, far away which requires patience and deep
pockets to succeed in. CMEF is a show where one gets a sense that
China means business and is changing so fast that old attitudes
need to be thrown away and thrown away quickly!

Sales & Marketing Director
Eschmann Equipment
ABHI is delighted to announce that it will, once again, take a
UK pavilion at the Spring CMEF next year. 12,243 medical
device manufacturers exhibited at the show in 2006, which
represented a 17.19% increase with the previous year.

Nottingham; 6 September 2007
DISCOVER YOUR BUSINESS POTENTIAL IN CHINA
China is one of the fastest growing markets in the world
offering huge trade and investment opportunities for British
companies - but it is no ordinary market for exporters and
investors. The size of the country, its business culture and its
trading system can make it a complicated place in which to do
business.
UK Trade & Investment is inviting all Healthcare and BioPharma
companies, who are interested in finding out about the potential of
the China market, to its FREE informative
seminar.

6. Setting up a Manufacturing
Base in China

Glory Medical Group has grown from small beginnings trading in
medical systems around twenty years ago.
The group was formed in 1998 and since
then it has grown into a multi million GBP turnover collection of
companies.
Its interests include hotels, food and real estate but the
company bedrock has always been its association with medical
matters.
This growth has been achieved by the vision and careful
stewardship of the Company President and General Manager: Mr. Simon
Liang.

7. Industry-wide survey- all
requested to submit
Closing date: 7 September 2007
Last summer, ABHI in partnership with Ernst & Young
conducted a survey of the medical device industry entitled
"Your Industry, Your Future, Your Say" which
highlighted the significant challenges and uncertainty within
the UK medical device sector at this time. The trends in this
paper showing evidence of a weak UK market were then underlined
by two business trends papers conducted in 2006 and 2007.
This year we are repeating the exercise to discover if this is a
continuing trend, and to find out what impact recent developments
in NHS procurement policy, such as the outsourcing of NHS Logistics
to DHL/Novation, have had on the sector. This survey will provide
vital evidence that ABHI can use to reinforce its arguments to
Government on how its policies are impacting on the industry, as
well as giving an authoritative picture of the current state of the
industry.
We are keen to ensure that the widest possible participation is
represented in this study.

India's economy is one of the fastest growing in the world with
a rapidly expanding consumer class, and is the second largest
export market in the developing world after China - Are you
taking advantage?
The UK has strong ties with India - In 2004 the UK exported over
