6. ASEAN Markets Briefing including
HOSPIMedica Thailand
|

The 7m diameter clock/sundial is the largest near
the Equator. It was made as a symbol and inspiration for the new
town of Batu Kawan in Pulau, Pinang opposite Penang.
The lower section of the ring acts as a sundial
telling time by day and the upper section is a clock recording time
through LEDS by night. The feature was unveiled by the Prime
Minister of Malaysia at the launch of the new town.

7. Meet with Yvonne Dale, World Bank
Liaison Representative 29.05.07
As the Global Development Liaison Officer for UKTI, Washington
DC, Yvonne Dale interacts with the World Bank Group and the
Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), both headquartered in
Washington DC.
The World Bank Group is one of the world's largest sources of
development assistance. The financial support provided by the World
Bank to developing countries rose to US$22.3 billion in FY 2005; of
this US$2.12 billion was committed to the Health Sector for
developing countries globally.
Link: World Bank Health, Nutrition and Population (HNP)
website.
The IDB, the oldest, regional multi-lateral development bank, is
the largest source of development finance for Latin America and the
Caribbean. It has 47 member countries (26 borrowing and 21
non-borrowing - including the UK). In FY 2006 the IDB lent
approximately US$6 billion and provided technical assistance grants
of US$104 million.

8. Request for company case studies to
support ABHI research
The ABHI and Advamed (ABHI's US equivalent) have just started a
joint public affairs / lobbying project, with the assistance of the
public affairs consultancy Bell Pottinger Public Affairs
(BPPA).
The aim of the work is to improve the image of our industry,
from one that is seen as a cost to one seen as part of the solution
to financial pressure for the NHS.
We are hoping to illustrate the value of our industry to the UK
and the NHS through the use of case studies. When contacting these
targets in the past, we have frequently been asked for examples. It
is crucial, therefore, that these case studies reinforce the
problems faced by the industry in the UK.
Below are the broad categories for which we are seeking case
studies. The list is not exhaustive and if you could provide a case
study for an area not outlined below, we would still be grateful to
hear from you:
- UK company moved to the US
- UK company relying on export to grow
- US company not launched product in the UK, or launched much
later than elsewhere because market is so difficult
- Other company not launched product in the UK, or launched much
later than elsewhere because market so difficult
- Multinational experiencing problems in the UK
- Highly innovative UK SME
- UK company launched innovative product abroad first
- UK company selling highly innovative product in India / China
that is not yet available in the UK
- UK company investing in the UK, although relying on exports to
survive
Ideally, your company would be named in the case study. However
this is not essential, and your company can remain anomymous if you
prefer.

9. Small medical technology companies
seeing fall in revenue from weak UK market
A new survey of small to medium-sized businesses (SME) in the
medical device sector has confirmed fears that UK sales are
sluggish in comparison with their export activity.
The ABHI/Ernst & Young SME Business Trends survey reflected
the results of a similar survey of large companies in 2006 in
showing a UK sales growth of only 2.2% compared to export growth of
10% from 2005-2006. This resulted in a fall in UK revenues as
a percentage of total revenues from 66.9% to 65.2%.
These results raise concerns over the continued appetite or
ability of medical device manufacturers to continue to invest in
the UK market, and actually suggest that investment is already
moving elsewhere.
The ABHI/Ernst & Young SME Business Trends Survey can be
viewed here:
(Article has already appeared in
'Primed')
In June ABHI will be undertaking a larger more in-depth survey
in conjunction with Ernst & Young. The aim of the survey will
be to look in more detail at the impact of the changes to
procurement policy on the industry.
