Patient Case Studies
Medical technology plays a significant role in helping transform
the NHS and increasing patient productivity – a vital element in an
economy facing the prospect of an ageing society. According to
Government figures, the number of people aged over 65 has doubled
in the last seventy years and the number of people over 90 will
double in the next 25 years. Less invasive procedures increase the
throughput of patients, address problems of bed blocking, reduce
patient waiting times and improve overall patient access to the
NHS.
The UK spends an average 4.2 per cent of the overall NHS budget
on medical technology, which compares unfavourably with other
European countries (Sweden 10.5 per cent, Spain 8.1 per cent,
Portugal 7.8 per cent and France 6.2 per cent ). The Northern
European average spend is 6.4 per cent.
