  • ABHI response to Darzi Review consultation

In November 2007 Lord Darzi and Mark Britnell, DG of Commissioning at the DH, asked the ABHI to submit our views into Lord Darzi's NHS next stage review. The submission addressed these questions:

  1. What are the existing barriers to innovation in the NHS?
  2. What are the most important policy measures we could take in order to realise the full potential of innovation across the NHS?
  3. What are the most significant challenges to implementing these policy measures?

  • Comprehensive Spending Review inquiry

The Treasury Select Committee, in its announcement of 1 December 2006, invited submissions of written evidence in connection with the Committee’s inquiry into the Comprehensive Spending Review. • The Cooksey Review

The ABHI submitted evidence to Sir David Cooksey's 2006 Review into medical reseach and development funding. The Review recommended a long-term strategic approach to the way R&D and innovation are translated into healthcare delivery and the more explicit involvement of industry in achieving this. The Review's recommendations, which took on board the points made by the ABHI, have been adopted across government  after being endorsed by Gordon Brown in his Pre-Budget Report.

  • NHS Select Committee inquiry into workforce needs and planning for the NHS

The ABHI submitted evidence to the Health Select committee inquiry into workforce issues in the NHS. The ABHI Highlighted the fact that NHS capacity and efficiency problems have often been attributed in large part to human resource problems; either staff costs being too high in some disciplines or staff shortages in others. The ABHI was keen to stress the role the medical device industry can play in training staff, (a value added service often overlooked in most cost effectiveness analysis) and how increasing spending on medical technology could help achieve a growth in NHS productivity of 3 percent, according to the Wanless review.
