UK Market
ABHI UK market activity focuses on the environment in which the medical technology industry operates in the UK.
ABHI activity in this area covers key issues and initiatives including, but not limited to:
Procurement
ABHI continues to focus on the commercial landscape and on how medical technology for the NHS is procured. The outline NHS commercial strategy for England published in May 2009 has provided little detail and ABHI continues to press for a simplified procurement landscape in order to reduce cost-to-serve for suppliers and the NHS.
Office for Life Sciences
ABHI has played an instrumental role in the Office for Life Sciences initiative and contributed to the development of the Life Sciences Blueprint published in July 2009. ABHI continues to engage in the initiative and to co-ordinate medical technology industry involvement.

Ministerial Medical Technology Strategy Group
ABHI provides industry secretariat for the Ministerial Medical Technology Strategy Group (MMTSG) and many of the industry members are also ABHI members. The MMTSG is the key strategic group in the representation of the medical technology sector to Government. MMTSG has been crucial in building on the raised profile and importance of the sector following the Healthcare Industries Task Force, to continue to address the live issues of adoption of technology.
Health Technology Assessment and evaluation
The provision of evidence of clinical and cost effectiveness of medical technology is increasingly required of industry. ABHI works across various HTA organisations, particularly with the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), to work towards the adoption of appropriate evaluation methods for medical technology.
Reimbursement
ABHI keeps in close touch with developments in reimbursement policy for medical devices across Europe , and provides industry input to mechanisms such as Payment by Results in particular.
